Metal Art, introductory course, 30 hec

Description

This course package is aimed at you who want an introduction to artistic studies in metal art. Throughout an entire semester, you will have the opportunity to explore different techniques in metal through assignments and themes with a focus on materials, body, and space. You will receive support in developing working methods and reflecting on your work, and also in communicating your choice of methods orally and in writing. Through lectures, supervised exercises, workshops, and tutorials, you will explore visual design and communication, as well as theory and history, providing a foundation for a rich and well-rounded education as you develop your craftsmanship. 

You will study in an international and unique environment: HDK-Valand at Steneby in Dals Långed, 170 kilometres north of Gothenburg. We have one of the largest academic metal workshop in the world, including a 1200-square-meter forge. If you want to continue your studies beyond one semester, you can apply for a continuation course that takes place during the spring term.

Admission is made subject to availability in our workshops. The language of instruction is English, but if you are Swedish-speaking, you can perform certain tasks in Swedish. You can apply in English or Swedish.

SBHI01 Theory and History 1, 4.5 credits
SBVI01 Visual Studies, Visual Literacy 1, 7.5 credits

Selection:

The selection is based on an assessment of submitted work samples. Information and instructions regarding the work samples can be found under each course at www.hdk-valand.gu.se/english/education/courses. Submitting work samples is mandatory for a complete application.

An application is only valid with a correctly submitted portfolio

Portfolio instructions for autumn course 2020

The selection is based on your portfolio, including the following:

  1. CV (max 2000 characters)
     
  2. Letter of intent: A personal letter that describes your choice and expectations of the course. Also describe what/who gives you inspiration (max 3000 characters).
     
  3. Present, by using images, an object in metal (large or small, contemporary or past) that made an impression on you. Note! No self-made item. Briefly tell in writing why you chose this object. Evaluate the form, expression, context, etc. 5-10 pictures and max 800 characters
     
  4. Hand drawings, sketches, paintings or life drawings (figure studies). 5-10 pictures
     
  5. Images (photos, prints) of work/objects you have designed and made yourself, preferably in metal, work/objects made in other materials can also be uploaded. Write down the facts of the material you used, the size of your work and the year you made them, for each piece. 5-10 pictures


Your portfolio is assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Material knowledge and craft skills
  • Artistic development potential


Since we review the portfolios anonymously we ask you not to include your name, personal identity number or other personal details in the different parts of the portfolio. Your account details will not be visible to the reviewers.

Submit your portfolio

Your portfolio is submitted digitally in our portfolio system SlideRoom, applyartsgu.slideroom.eu

SlideRoom closes at midnight (CET) on the day of deadline and after that it is not possible to submit. When you have submitted your portfolio in time you receive a confirmation e-mail from SlideRoom.


NOTE: Uploading media files in SlideRoom can be a time-consuming process, so it is very important to start early before closing time. It is not possible to submit or complete an application after midnight.


For the purpose of handling and reviewing work samples, we use an external service provided by SlideRoom Technologies Inc. By using the service, you agree that the University of Gothenburg may handle your personal data and material submitted via SlideRoom in order to evaluate your application for education. The material you upload remains with SlideRoom until you choose to remove it from their servers. The University of Gothenburg may, by individual agreement with the applicant and in a way that the university decides, offer an alternative opportunity to submit work samples.

Selection and Admission

All complete applications are assessed by a jury consisting of representatives from the department.

Your academic qualifications are assessed separately from the portfolio. If you do not meet the entry requirement, your application is unqualified. If you are unqualified the jury has the possibility of making exemptions from the requirements, if they have ranked your portfolio high and considers your background to be equal that of the requirements. This is done on the initiative of the jury and you cannot ask for this assessment to be made.
