During one semester you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of wood materials and techniques. You explore different techniques, both proficiently and expressively, based on different tasks and themes, with starting point in the concept of material, body and space. You get support in developing working methods and reflection on your own work, as well as communicating your choice of methods, both in writing and orally. Visual studies and literacy, as well as theory and history, are also included in the course. Teaching takes the form of lectures and exercises with supervision, workshops and briefings. During the spring semester there is a continuation course that should be applied for separately.

The course is part of the international environment at the HDK Steneby. Language of instruction is English. If you are Swedish-speaking, you can perform a few modules in Swedish, if you wish to. Applications can be submitted in English or Swedish.

Portfolio instructions

The selection is based on your portfolio, including the following:

  1. Previous experience and education, max 3000 characters
In this part, you refer to courses you have attended and describe past experiences that you believe are important for your application. Having attended a preparatory artistic training or preparatory wooden craft training is an advantage but not a requirement. Previous employments, hobbies or travels can be just as important to list here, if you find that it strengthens your application.

  2. Work samples, 6 pages
In this part you show own work that represent your creative experience. We want to see photographs of furniture and objects, drawings, sketches, paintings and/or croquis. Here we look at form and color, presentation and ideas. The education is based on independent and practical exploration of the material wood and therefore we would like to see examples of experience of this in your portfolio.

Since we review the portfolios anonymously we ask you not to include your name, personal identity number or other personal details in the different parts of the portfolio. Your account details will not be visible to the reviewers.

Submit your portfolio

Your portfolio is submitted digitally in our portfolio system SlideRoom, applyartsgu.slideroom.eu

SlideRoom closes at midnight (CET) on the day of deadline and after that it is not possible to submit. When you have submitted your portfolio in time you receive a confirmation e-mail from SlideRoom.

NOTE: Uploading media files in SlideRoom can be a time-consuming process, so it is very important to start early before closing time. It is not possible to submit or complete an application after midnight.

For the purpose of handling and reviewing work samples, we use an external service provided by SlideRoom Technologies Inc. By using the service, you agree that the University of Gothenburg may handle your personal data and material submitted via SlideRoom in order to evaluate your application for education. The material you upload remains with SlideRoom until you choose to remove it from their servers. The University of Gothenburg may, by individual agreement with the applicant and in a way that the university decides, offer an alternative opportunity to submit work samples.

Selection and Admission

All complete applications are assessed by a jury consisting of representatives from the department.

Your academic qualifications are assessed separately from the portfolio. If you do not meet the entry requirement, your application is unqualified. If you are unqualified the jury has the possibility of making exemptions from the requirements, if they have ranked your portfolio high and considers your background to be equal that of the requirements. This is done on the initiative of the jury and you cannot ask for this assessment to be made.
